If you follow the money rather than the blather, it’s clear that the American system is a bipartisan fusion of economic models broken down along generational lines: unaffordable Greek-style socialism for the old, virulently purified capitalism for the young. Both political parties have agreed to this arrangement: The Boomers and older will be taken care of. Everybody younger will be on their own.
If you have time I really recommend listening to the radio piece. Listening to these soldiers’ stories is a real eye-opener. The Army treats the emotionally wounded like so much broken equipment to be tossed aside.
Just to put it out there. If you enjoy live music, the blues, and combinations thereof, you might want to come out to to Googie’s Lounge to hear me play a set at 9:30, followed by Bo DePeña at 10:30. It’ll be good times!
Googie’s is the upstairs of The Living Room, at 154 Ludlow Street in lower Manhattan, near Houston Street.
My alma mater, I am ashamed to say, published this doozy of a “political cartoon” today:
In addition to the obvious victimized-David-Duke-conservative complex, let us also note the misspelling of Trayvon Martin’s name. But then, the idiot who excreted this probably doesn’t care about how “colored” people spell their strange, exotic jungle names.
And an editor let this run? There’s no excuse for this. The Daily Texan might as well start calling itself The Texas Travesty if this is any indication of how the paper is run these days.
Good morning! Prostitution is legal in Ontario now. Sex workers may also hire drivers and other assorted manservants, but pimping, being exploitative in nature, is still illegal.
And the Syrian government (alias “destroyer of worlds”) has agreed to a peace plan laid out by Kofi Annan. (Note: this is neither an odd nor an end, but a pretty big deal.) It’s not clear as of this writing whether the Syrian government’s brutal crackdown on opposition, which has claimed an estimated 8,000 lives, has yet stopped.
It takes the precise opposite of an asshole to admit when one has been wrong, particularly on this scale; and damned if Americans don’t love a good redemption story. Wonder if This American Life will have Daisey back on, if only for a segment? It’s a great relief to see Daisey to graciously own up to his mistakes, even though his actions were not without their well-intentioned-yet-misguided defenders.
I intend to listen to The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs at the earliest opportunity, in the spirit of good theater and fiction. Kudos to Mike Daisey for doing the right thing.
The ever-interesting SmartPlanet recently featured a post on transhumanism, a fascinating philosophical movement that amounts to a sort of technotheology that has, for its adherents, very practical implications.
To refer to transhumanism as such is not to dismiss it but to give due credit to its scope. For man transhumanists, their central concern is the Singularity – the point at which artificial intelligence outstrips human intelligence and beyond which predicting anything becomes impossible. Click on that link and explore the Humanity Plus website for a fuller picture of the transhumanist movement.
A quick Google search reveals that Islamic thinkers have also considered transhumanism:
My point in all of this is not to plug for transhumanism as a philosophy or movement; but as a reporter interested in science, and a science fiction geek, it is one of those weird and wonderful intellectual areas where fact and fiction get promiscuous, and where anything is possible.
